Mavs Finish Opening Weekend With Two Shutouts

WAYNE, Neb.- UNO ended its opening weekend with another shutout after a 4-0 win at Wayne State College Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Jane Splittgerber made her debut start in goal to pick up the shutout and win. Freshman Tricia Barziel and Megan Herzberg scored their first collegiate goals and senior Ashley Grace and junior Jaime Venhaus added the other two Maverick tallies. WSC dropped to 0-1-0 and No. 2 UNO improved to 2-0-0.
Venhaus scored in the 11th minute, her second on the year, unassisted. The two freshmen scored next, six minutes apart, to go into the half with a three goal lead. Braziel took a midfield pass from junior Molly Herzberg and dribbled through the Wildcat defense to score. Megan Herzberg (Molly's younger sister) then scored unassisted with seven minutes left in the half. Grace ended the scoring late in the second half directly in front of the goal when she put in a rebound from freshman Whitney Frantzen's shot.
The Wildcats had a few close chances, but Splittgerber stopped four of the five WSC shots on goal. Junior defender Rachel Tushner made the other save when she ran all the way back to the goal line to kick senior Amanda Keller's shot out of the box. Splittgerber, a goalkeeper her senior year at Omaha Benson HS, headed a Wildcat shot out of the way in the second to preserve the shutout.
WSC keeper Erika Mather stopped 8 of 12 shots on goal in taking the loss.
UNO will play Truman State and Central Missouri State next weekend in the CMSU Invitational and won't return home until it hosts Washburn Sept. 20.
