UNO Splits in North Central Region Challenge

The University of Nebraska at Omaha (7-6) volleyball team split a pair of matches in the 2003 North Central Region Challenge on Friday at UNO's Sapp Fieldhouse, sweeping Bemidji State 3-0 (30-15, 30-28, 30-25) and losing to Concordia St. Paul 3-0 (30-19, 30-27, 30-27).
Three Mavericks posted double-doubles as Nebraska-Omaha cruised to the victory over Bemidji State in the Mavericks' first tournament match. Junior Alyssa Matthes (Milford, Neb.) blasted a team-high 14 kills and a .542 attack percentage to lead the UNO offense.
Junior outside hitter Julia McConahay (North Platte, Neb.) tallied 12 kills, with no errors in 24 attempts for a .500 attack percentage. Junior outside hitter Amy Sibbernsen (Omaha, Neb.) recorded 11 kills and a team-high 15 digs in the victory. Senior setter Kylie Lebeda (Omaha, Neb.) dished out 48 assists, to go along with nine digs and three aces.
The Mavericks outhit Bemidji State .294 to .135 for the match and held a 12-8 advantage in team blocks.
Plagued by 22 hitting errors, the Mavericks finished day one of the tournament with the three-game loss to Concordia-St. Paul. The Golden Bears outhit UNO .325 to .187 in the match.
Matthes hit .529 with 11 kills, 2 errors, in 17 attempts to lead the UNO offense. Matthes added a team-high five blocks. Sibbernsen contributed with 12 kills and five digs, while junior Chelsea Miller (Aurora, Neb.) paced the Maverick defense with 12 digs, while adding eight kills.
UNO will continue action in the North Central Region Challenge when they face Minnesota State, Moorhead on Saturday, Sept. 13 beginning at 12 p.m.. The Mavericks will conclude the tournament with a 6 p.m. match against Northern State.
