Mavs Top Mo. Southern for Fifth-Straight Win
Sep 12, 2003 | Women's Soccer
JOPLIN, Mo.- Three second-half goals helped the top-ranked Mavs defeat Missouri Southern 4-0 and improve to 5-0 Saturday evening in a constant drizzle at Bodon Field. The Mavs now have a five-game shutout streak and are nearing their seven game team record set last year. They have not been scored on since Christian Brothers put in the game-winner in the national title match at 65:08 last year.
The Mavs had been used to quick starts, opening the scoring no later than the 12th minute in the first four games, but had to wait until the 27:28 minute mark when junior Jaime Venhaus scored unassisted from 12 yards out. UNO outshot the Lady Lions 10-3 in the first half, but had only a 3-2 advantage on shots on goal, keeping the opening period a close one.
Senior Stephanie Kirby helped break the game open when she scored seven minutes into the second half with an assist from freshman Tricia Braziel. Kirby tallied her fourth goal and Braziel picked up her first assist. Just three minutes later freshman Haley Fries notched her fourth goal of the year on a cross from Ashley Grace (third assist).
The Mavs held that lead nearly until time was called, but sophomore Jane Splittgerber took a pass from fellow sophomore Christen Boeckel and scored her first of the year with just 21 seconds remaining. Boeckel grabbed her second assist.
Sophomore Amy Price stopped the four Lady Lion shots on goal to pick up her fourth shutout while Southern keeper Kim Boessen stopped 11 Maverick would-be goals as her team fell to 1-3.
After playing under the lights Friday in Joplin, the Mavs will travel
to Bolivar, Mo., to play Missouri Southern Saturday in a noon game.
Notes: Junior Anne Willrett saw her first action since the NCC championship game last year, coming in as a sub...Fries continues to lead the Mavs in scoring, now with ten points (4 goals, 2 assists)...the Mavs complete their five-game road trip Saturday, then will return home next weekend to host Washburn and Emporia State, two teams they have never met.
