Mavs Hang on for 2-0 Victory

OMAHA, Neb.- The Maverick defense held Emporia State to just two shots but the UNO offense only put in two of their 46 to win 2-0 Sunday afternoon at the Soccer Field at Ak-Sar-Ben. The top-ranked Mavs picked up shutout number seven as they improved to 8-0-0 in preparation for a trip to NCAA division I Drake next Friday and D II Metro State, the third-ranked team, at home next Sunday.
UNO took 22 shots in the first half but only 10 were on net. ESU goalkeeper Lauren Ishman stopped all of them. In the second half freshman Haley Fries finally broke the scoreless tie when she put in a deflection from junior Molly Herzberg's free kick at midfield at the 57:41 mark. Junior Anne Willrett then gave the Mavs some cushion with just over six minutes left. Sophomore keeper Amy Price came out near midfield and played the ball in to junior Ashley Grace who found Willrett in the box for the goal.
Grace's assist gives her 16 points (6 goals, 4 assists), the most by a Mav and Fries follows with 14 (6 goals, 2 assists). Willrett now has two goals and Price has two assists. Ishman made 14 saves and three were credited to the team. The Hornets, outshot 46-2, fell to 2-4-0.
Next Friday the Mavs will play at 7 p.m. at Drake then will host Metro State Sunday at 1. The Mavs will then have played four-straight new opponents.
