First Half Cold Spell Dooms Mavs

FARGO, N.D. -- North Dakota State took advantage of the Mavericks' cold first-half shooting Friday night to post a 73-63 North Central Conference victory at the Bison Sports Arena. The loss snapped a four-game win streak and dropped the Mavs to 11-4 overall and 2-1 in the NCC before Saturday night's game at North Dakota.
Andre Tarpley led UNO with 15 points and Ty Graham added 14.
UNO jumped out front 17-7, aided by two technical fouls against the Bison, in the first eight minutes, then stalled. The Bison ripped off a 23-1 run and held UNO to a single field goal the final 13 minutes of the first half to take a 32-22 lead at the break. The Mavericks hit on just 5 of 21 shots the first half (23.8 percent).
The Bison built the lead to as high as 13 points in the opening minutes of the second half before the Mavericks recovered to make a run. UNO, which came from 16 points down last Saturday before rallying to upset No. 3 ranked South Dakota State in overtime, drew to as close as five before the Bison responded to notch their eighth straight win.
The game began on an unusual note as the Bison were assessed a technical foul for hanging on the rim during pre-game warm-ups. Graham made the two free shots, then connected on a three-pointer to give the Mavs a quick 5-0 lead. Minutes later, a technical was called on the NDSU bench personnel and Zac Robinson made a pair of free shots to give UNO a 17-7 lead with 12:14 to play in the half.
The Bison then went on their run and the Mavs managed just three free throws before Arthur Boults ended an 11-minute stretch without a field goal, scoring with 2:01 left in the half.
The teams traded baskets for over 10 minutes the second half before UNO mounted a run. Trailing 58-48, Chris DeSpain and Tarpley hit shots to bring the Mavs within six. With 4:32 left, Levy Jones hit a pair of free throws to pull the Mavericks within 62-57 and after a turnover, Tarpley missed a three-pointer that would have made it even closer.
David Erbes hit two free shots for the Bison, Jack May added one more and Erbes scored on a layup in a 5-0 run that restored the lead to double figures for NDSU, 67-57, with 2:48 left. UNO could pull no closer than nine the rest of the way.
Aaron Green and Ben Nemmers led North Dakota State with 15 points each and Erbes added 13 to go with a game-high 10 rebounds.
