Graham Beats Buzzer, Sioux, 74-72

GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- Ty Graham's baseline jumper beat the buzzer and lifted the Mavericks to a 74-72 victory over North Dakota Saturday night at Engelstad Arena. Graham had given the Mavs a 72-69 lead with 22.7 seconds left with a pair of free throws before the Fighting Sioux tied the game with a three-pointer by Evan Lindahl with five seconds to play.
The Mavs took the ball down court and Graham got off an eight-footer in traffic just before the buzzer.
UNO, now 12-4 overall and 3-1 in the North Central Conference, will host St. Cloud State Friday night at 8 in its next action.
North Dakota (10-7, 1-3) pulled away late in the first half to take a 38-32 lead into halftime and led 55-48 with 10:48 to play in the second half.
The Mavericks held the Fighting Sioux scoreless for a stretch of 4:47 and without a field goal for 6:47 to get back into the game.
Sophomore guard Zac Robinson got the Mavericks in gear with a three-pointer and Chris DeSpain followed 30 seconds later with a layup. Tola Dada tied the game at 55 with a jumper with 7:55 left.
UNO built a 61-57 lead after Graham's three-pointer with 4:26 left before UND finally scored from the floor. Lindahl and Dada traded three-pointers before Lindahl nailed another for a 67-66 Sioux lead with 1:15 to play.
Andre Tarpley then connected from behind the arc with 51 seconds left to put UNO back on top, 69-67. After a steal by Dada, Tarpley was fouled and hit one of two free shots for a three-point UNO cushion with 33 seconds remaining.
Jade Jahner brought the Sioux within a point with two free throws with 22 seconds left, but Graham, fouled on the inbounds pass, canceled those out with two of his own to restore UNO's three-point lead, 72-69.
Lindahl then missed a three-pointer, but the Sioux gathered in the rebound and after a timeout he hit his sixth trey of the game with five seconds left to tie the game at 72.
Instead of calling a timeout, the Mavericks elected to play on and Graham tossed up a prayer from eight feet along the left baseline that bounced on the rim and off the glass while the buzzer sounded.
It was the second straight win for the Mavs at Grand Forks. UNO downed UND in the first round of last year's NCC tournament, ending a 22-game home court winning streak.
Dada led UNO with 20 points and Tarpley added 11. Graham scored all of his nine points the second half, with seven coming in the final 4:26.
Lindahl, who was 6-for-12 from behind the arc, scored a game-high 26 points and Mike Johnson added 17. Each had 10 rebounds.
