Big Second Half Propels Mavs, 78-69

The Mavericks held St. Cloud State scoreless for nearly seven minutes to open the second half to come from behind and register a 78-69 North Central Conference victory over the Huskies at Sapp Fieldhouse and take sole possession of second place.
The Mavs, now 14-4 overall and 4-1 in the NCC, will host Minnesota State, Mankato, which lost to South Dakota Friday, 95-86, Saturday night at 8.
St. Cloud State (12-5, 3-2) led most of the second half and claimed a 36-29 halftime lead. The Mavericks stymied the Huskies in the opening minutes of the second half, going on a 12-0 run that was aided by three-pointers by Calvin Kapels and Zac Robinson.
The Huskies missed their first seven shots of the second half and went 7:34 without a field goal in falling behind 43-36 before a layup by Jason Allen ended the drought.
St. Cloud State stayed close until Robinson nailed another three-pointer with 4:43 left for a 62-53 lead. That was UNO's final field goal of the game, but the Mavs took turns knocking down free throws down the stretch. UNO hit 13 of 14 from the line over a three-minute span to take a 75-69 lead with 44 seconds left.
The Huskies couldn't score after a pair of free throws by Nate Miller with 49 seconds left and two free shots by Randy Bland with 17 seconds left and one by Kapels with three seconds remaining sealed the win, the third straight and seventh in the last eight games for UNO.
Kapels' career-high 21 points, 14 the second half, led UNO. Robinson, who hit five of six three pointers, had 15 and Ty Graham scored 12. Kapels was 10-for-12 from the line and hit all five shots he took from the field, including a three-pointer.
Miller led the Huskies with 23 points, Alex Carlson added 18 and Joe Evert 10.
