Mavs Open Practice Friday for 2004-05 Season

Coach Kevin McKenna's fourth Maverick basketball team will begin workouts Friday morning at 6 a.m. at Sapp Fieldhouse in preparation for the 2004-05 season. The Mavs, 22-8 last year, will be gunning for their second straight North Central Conference title and a third appearance in the NCAA II tournament under McKenna.
Three starters return for the Mavericks, Randy Bland, Calvin Kapels and Levy Jones. In all, eight squad members will be in uniform, including 6-7 forward Ryan Curtis, the 2003 NCC freshman of the year, and Andre Tarpley, the top returning scorer from last season.
Key losses for the Mavs include the NCC most valuable player, forward Tola Dada, and point guard Ty Graham. But McKenna, who has posted a 66-27 three-season mark at UNO, is confident of the class of newcomers that includes three high school recruits and four transfers.
The Mavericks open the 2004-05 season at Nebraska-Kearney on Nov. 15.
