Soccer Hosts Three-Game Homestand
Oct 5, 2004 | Women's Soccer
OMAHA, Neb.-- No. 13 UNO will stay home this week for three games first hosting Northwest Missouri State Wednesday at 4 p.m. Saturday the Mavs will face Augustana at 1 p.m., then Sunday Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs travel to Omaha for a 1 p.m. matchup. The Mavericks opened North Central Conference play last week by defeating St Cloud State 4-1, moving their overall record to 9-2-1.
Odds N' Ends
The Mavericks carry a perfect 4-0 career record versus the Bearcats of Northwest Missouri State, but have not played their bordering-state rivals since 2001. Against Augustana, UNO is 4-0, defeating the Vikings 5-3 in 2003. This year Minesota-Duluth is new to the NCC, but not new to the Mavs. UNO defeated the bulldogs in the first game last year 2-0.
Mavs Move up in Poll
Following a stellar 2-0 week, UNO moved up in the NSCAA/adidas poll from their previous spot of No. 14 to 13. Three teams which the Mavs have played this year are ranked: Truman State, Metro State and Regis. Both Truman and Metro State are rated in the top five.
About the Bearcats
Northwest Missouri State enters Wednesday play with a 2-8-0 overall record. Northwest has lost three straight including losses to Washburn, Southwest Baptist and Central Missouri, three teams the Mavericks have defeated this year. In Northwest's last game against Washburn the Bearcats lost 2-1. A first half deficit of two, was too much for Northwest, as Tracey Sacco scored their only goal late in the 89th minute. During their three-game dry-spell, NWMS has been outscored 8-2.
About the Vikings
Augustana enters the UNO game with a 5-7 overall record and an 0-2 record in the NCC. The Augustana offense is led by sophomore Erin Seidel who has scored 15 goals. Seidel is four goals shy of the Augustana single-season goal record, scoring in all but two of the Vikings games; the two games resulting in shutout losses. Augie looks to avenge a 5-3 loss in 2003, a game they were leading 2-1 at the half, before UNO scored four second-half goals.
About the Bulldogs
New to the NCC, the Bulldogs face UNO for the first time as conference foes. Duluth holds a 3-4-3 mark as they travel to Omaha for the UNO matchup. The Bulldogs are led by senior Erin Noonan who has tallied eight goals and one assist. In goal are freshman tandum Kari Stellmaker and Briana Francisco who have split time this year with Francisco loging in the last three matches.
Wrapping up last week
The Mavericks defeated St. Cloud State 4-1 for their first NCC win of 2004. Less than three minutes later, Beth McGill scored her team-leading 11th goal of the year, giving her a streak of seven games scoring a goal on a pass from senior Anne Willrett. UNO added another goal at the 38:11 mark with Haley Fries assisting Ali Portell. St. Cloud cut the Mavs' lead to two scoring a goal minutes before the half. Amber Richardson gave UNO extra breathing room when she scored the forth and final goal for the Mavericks at te 53:15 mark, asssited by Brandie Beale. The UNO defense continued to confuse opposing offenses as they held the Huskies to only one shot.
Amy Price and Ellen Petersen combined for time between the pipes, as UNO riled off their third straight win during its eight game streak without a defeat.
