Kapels' 25 Points Help Mavs Stay Perfect

Calvin Kapels scored a career-high 25 points Sunday afternoon to help the Mavericks remain unbeaten with an 81-73 non-conference win over Missouri Valley College at Lee & Helene Sapp Fieldhouse. The Mavs are now 3-0 before facing NCAA Division I Colorado State in Fort Collins Wednesday night.
Kapels scored 15 of his points the first half as the Mavs surged to as many as 16 in front of the Vikings, before settling for a 43-32 halftime advantage.
The Vikings, now 5-1, scrapped their way back into the contest after intermission and pulled to within five at 58-53 midway through the half on Mike Atkinson's layup. UNO stopped the comeback wtih a 7-1 run.
Ryan Curtis sealed the victory in the closing minutes, scoring six of his 16 points in a 63-second stretch.
Chris Ealm led the Vikings with 25 points, Atkinson added 17 to go with 11 rebounds,and Ramone Powell 13 points.
Besides Kapels, who connected on 7 of 12 field goal attempts, but was 6-for-6 inside the three-point line, the Mavs got 16 points and 12 rebounds from Curtis and 12 points from Andre Tarpley. Chris DeSpain added nine points and nine rebounds.
UNO, which shot 43.3 percent from the field, outrebounded the Vikings 50-36.
