Hot Second Half Carries Rams Past Mavs

FORT COLLINS, COLO. -- Hot-shooting Colorado State pulled away from the Mavericks the second half to post an 88-64 win Wednesday night at Moby Arena. The loss drops the UNO record to 3-1 before it plays Truman State Friday night at 8 in the Thanksgiving Classic at Sapp Fieldhouse.
The Mavs led most of the first half before the NCAA Division I Rams (3-0) caught up and then took the lead on a last-second three-point shot by Micheal Morris, 40-37. Colorado State shot over 70 percent from the field the first eight minutes of the second half and used a 12-0 run midway through the half to pull away.
UNO trailed by just 56-51 with 11:45 left in the second half when Jamaal Byers hit a pair of free shots, but the Rams caught fire and scored the next 12 points.
Randy Bland led the Mavericks, scoring 10 of his 12 total points the first half. Calvin Kapels had 10 points. Ryan Curtis led UNO with seven rebounds, however the taller Rams held a 38-26 edge on the boards.
Matt Williams led the Rams with 25 points and 10 rebounds, while Morris added 18 and Matt Nelson 12.
The Rams finished with 64 per cent shooting the second half and 56.3 percent for the game, including 57.1 percent from behind the arc. UNO, meanhwile shot just 28.6 percent the second half from the floor and 35.4 percent for the game.
"I think their size and athleticism finally caught up to us," Coach Kevin McKenna said. "We just couldn't get the stops we needed, no matter what we did defensively."
McKenna said his team needs "to build on the 25 to 27 minutes that we played well."
