Mavericks Breeze to 9th Straight Win

BROOKINGS, S.D. -- Senior guard Abdul Mills led four players in double figures Tuesday night as the No. 10 Mavericks raced to a 77-52 win in the first round of the Burger King Holiday Classic at Frost Arena. Mills scored 17 points as UNO improved to 12-1 on the season before meeting Wayne (Neb.) State Wednesday night at 6.
The Mavericks never trailed in the contest in jumping out to a 13-4 lead in the opening minutes. UNO, which shot 53.8 percent from the field the first half, used an 8-2 run ot close the opening period for a 37-26 lead at halftime.
Mills connected with a three-pointer and then converted three free throws when he was fouled on a shot from behind the arc to fuel a 16-6 run to open the second half. The Mavs shot 51.9 percent the second half and 52.8 percent for the game compared to 37 percent for Wayne State.
UNO led by as many as 30 points the second half in cruising to the victory. The Mavericks' only loss of the season came at the hands of NCAA Division I Colorado State by 74-61 on Nov. 24.
Randy Bland scored 13 points, Chris DeSpain 12 and Ryan Curtis 10 in the win. Curtis and DeSpain each added seven rebounds.
The Warriors, who fell to 5-5, were led by Erik Parker's 17 points and 11 rebounds and 10 points by Morris Hall.
