UNO Tops Wesleyan to Open Season

Maggie Russell started her college career the way she ended her high school one. Her 8-0 win in No. 2 doubles with teammate Abby Wilson helped the Mavs win all but one match to seal an 8-1 victory over Nebraska Wesleyan in the season opener Sunday afternoon at Hanscom Park Tennis Center. UNO swept the singles competition and took two of three doubles matches for the win.
Maverick senior Sara Batchelor hung on in what ended up being the final match of the day to defeat Olga Nedeina 7-6, 1-6 (10-8) in a super tie-breaker and take the No. 1 singles point. Lindsay Henjum won at No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-1 over Tiffany Lotter; No. 3 player Shannon Dinovo topped Wesleyan's Lauren Pfister 7-6, 6-0; and Anna Ristic won 6-2, 6-0 over Joy Weir at No. 4. Lindsay Loveland and Elizabeth Glogowski won by forfeit.
In No. 2 doubles, Russell, a former Nebraska state champ at Westside High School, teamed with Wilson in her college debut to defeat Weir/Lotter. At No. 1 Pam Le and Mikaila Spalding fell 8-6 to Wesleyan's Nedeina/Pfister and Batchelor and Sarah Huls won by forfeit at No. 3 doubles.
