Russell's Singles Win Seals Mav Win

ST. PETER, Minn.- Freshman Maggie Russell's first collegiate singles victory sealed a 5-4 win for the Mavs over North Dakota Friday night at the Gustavus Adolphus Invite. The victory over last year's North Central Conference champion was a key conference and regional win for the Mavs, 2-2, as they prepare for Saturday's duals with Gustavus, a top Division III team, and Winona State, an NCAA II tournament team last year.
Russell, playing at No. 5 singles, took UND's Hana Bloomberg 6-0, 6-3 in what ended up being the final and deciding match of the evening. Also picking up singles wins for the Mavs were Sara Batchelor at No. 1 and Shannon Dinovo at No. 6. Batchelor had to go into a tie breaker after defeating Jenny Cartwright 7-5 in the opening set but losing 4-6 in the second. Batchelor won the tie breaker 10-4. Dinovo won 6-3, 6-2 in straight sets over Annie Dufrense.
In doubles the Mavs picked up two points when Russell and Sarah Huls combined to defeat defending NCC No. 3 doubles champion Cartwright and Erin Sullivan 9-7 and Batchelor and Anna Ristic topped Bloomberg and Emily Spicer 8-6.
UNO will take on Winona at 9 a.m. and Gustavus at 1 p.m. Saturday before heading home for four straight at Hanscom Park Tennis Center.
