Mavs Alone in 2nd After Beating Bison

The Mavericks set up a showdown for first place with a 75-64 North Central Conference victory over North Dakota State Saturday night in front of 2,800 at Sapp Fieldhouse. UNO, now alone in second place, will meet first-place South Dakota State Friday night in Sapp Fieldhouse at 8.
Levy Jones scored a career-high 17 points and senior forward Tola Dada added 14 to lead the Mavericks to the win and improve UNO's records to 18-7 overall and 8-4 in the NCC. The Bison, who entered the weekend in first place, fell to 14-11 and 7-5.
South Dakota State defeated Minnesota State 90-88 to remain in first place with records of 25-3 and 9-3. UNO defeated the No. 3 ranked Jackrabbits 107-104 in Brookings in the first meeting on Jan. 10. The Mavs will end the regular season next Saturday, hosting Augustana.
The game was one of runs in the first half as UNO ran off the first nine points before the Bison turned the tables and tied the game with a 9-0 run. The Mavs then answered with 10 straight points in building a 29-9 run that produced a 38-18 margin with 2:47 remaining in the half.
The Bison didn't roll over, however, ending the half by scoring the final 10 points to trail at the break, 38-28. NDSU held UNO without a field goal for the final 4:18 of the first half.
NDSU kept its momentum after intermission and sliced UNO's lead to a half dozen twice, the last time on CoCo Cofield's layup to pull within 45-39 with 14:32 to play.
Randy Bland and Ryan Curtis then hit field goals to stop the comeback and the Mavs went on an 11-2 run and were never seriously threatened again.
Cofield's 20 points and eight rebounds led the Bison, while Ben Nemmers, who connected on four of six shots from behind the arc, added 19.
Besides Jones and Dada, Bland and Andre Tarpley each scored 10 and guard Calvin Kapels added eight points and tied his career high with eight rebounds.
