The Mavericks captured their first North Central Conference title in 20 years Saturday night with an 89-68 win over Augustana in front of 2,900 at Sapp Fieldhouse. Tola Dada led UNO with 15 points and Calvin Kapels added 12 as UNO reached the 20-win level for the third straight season.
The Mavericks, 20-7 and 10-4, will now host the semifinals and finals of the Wells Fargo Finals on March 5-6 at Sapp Fieldhouse.
Augustana (6-21, 2-12) put an early scare into the Mavericks by surging to an 18-8 lead midway through the first half. The Mavericks recovered, however, scoring the next 11 and then forged a 32-29 halftime lead.
UNO scored the first five points after halftime and went on an 18-3 run that took the suspense out of the outcome. The Mavericks shot a sizzling 68 percent from the floor the second half.
The Vikings were led by Rod Henry's 11 points, while Justin VanMeeteren added 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The title is the third in the NCC for the Mavericks, who also won in 1979 and 1984.
UNO's opponent in the Friday night semifinal won't be known until after the completion of first-round games on Tuesday night on campus sites.
