Hot Coyotes End Mav Season in NCAA Regional, 82-71

DENVER, COLO. --South Dakota's red-hot second-half shooting touch Saturday ended the Mavericks' season in the first round of the NCAA II North Central Regional tournament. The Coyotes shot 70 percent the second half in coming from 10 points down to post an 82-71 victory at the Auraria Events Center.
Tola Dada, the league's most valuable player in the regular season, closed his career with 20 points and became the school's 25th player to score over 1,000 points. He has 1,017, which puts him at No. 22. He aslo finished with 583 career rebounds, ninth all-time. Andre Tarpley and Randy Bland added 14 points and Ty Graham 12. UNO ended the year 22-8.
UNO, the North Central Conference regular season champions, defeated the Coyotes a week ago to win the Wells Fargo Finals post-season title and earn the automatic berth in the tournament, while the Coyotes were given an at-large berth. USD is now 22-9.
In Saturday's fourth meeting of the year, the Mavs appeared to be in control as they held USD to 36 percent shooting from the floor in taking a 33-24 lead into the locker room.
But guard Josh Mueller, who had connected on just 5 of 36 shots in the previous three meetings with UNO plus one half, found his touch and hit all four of his field goals in the opening 6:20 of the second half.
UNO senior guard Ty Graham hit a three-pointer and converted a three-point play to boost the Mavericks to a 40-30 lead with 17:13 left. The Coyotes then reeled off 13 straight points in a span of 3:28, climaxed by a three-pointer by Mueller. The Mavericks never led again.
Calvin Kapels and Chris DeSpain each pulled UNO back to within a point and Graham hit one of two free shots to tie the game at 45 with 11:44 left, but Steve Anderson's layup for the Coyotes at the 11:30 mark gave USD the lead for good.
Turner Trofholz led the Coyotes with 22 points, Mueller added 17 and Tommie King 15.
