Mavs Crown Three Champs, Finish Second

Shannon Dinovo became the first Mav to be named a North Central Conference Champion with a finals win at No. 6 singles. Just a few minutes later Abby Wilson joined her with a win at No. 5 and Wilson later joined Mikaila Spaulding at No. 3 doubles to take the title as the Mavs wrapped up the NCC tournament Saturday with a second-place finish behind defending champ North Dakota at Hanscom Park Tennis Center.
UND finished with 58 points, the Mavs followed with 52 and St. Cloud State finished third with 45.
Two years ago Dinovo became the first Maverick to play in the finals and this year as a senior she became the first to win a title with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Nicole Nyberg in the No. 6 finals.
Sophomore Abby Wilson, playing at No. 6, took her first set 6-2 against Hana Bloomberg of North Dakota but fell 6-1 in the second set. Wilson then fought back to win the final set 6-2.
After wrapping up her singles title, Wilson teamed with Spaulding to take the No. 3 doubles champ. Unseeded in the tournament, Wilson/Spaulding had to battle SCSU's Lauritsen/Pease in the semifinals, but the Mavs won that match 8-4 to advance to the finals.
After finishing third in every NCC tournament she played in, Spaulding, a senior, now had a chance to go out as a champion. She and Wilson fell behind early against UND's Bloomberg/Dufresne but the two battled back to tie the match at 7. Spaulding/Wilson then won the final two points to take the title.
Pam Le and Maggie Russell finished third in No. 1 doubles and Russell battled through the consolation rounds for a fifth-place finish at No. 4 singles.
Lindsay Henjum and Sarah Huls advanced to the No. 2 doubles finals but fell to UND for a second-place finish. Huls also took a second-place finish in No. 2 singles, her second in two years, and Henjum finished second at No. 3.
No. 1 singles player Sara Batchelor finished third with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Augustana's Melanie Feehan.
Overall, the Mavs won three titles and UND took the other six to repeat as champs. The Fighting Sioux won three of five finals that were head-to-head against UNO to help them secure the championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
The Mavs, third in the latest NCAA North Central Region ranking, will wait until April 28 to hear where they're going for the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament. The top two teams in each region host the May 7-9 tournament.
