Mavs Advance to NCAA Regional Finals

TOPEKA, Kan. - Junior Lindsay Henjum's win at No. 3 singles wrapped up a 5-0 win for UNO over St. Cloud State in the opening round of the NCAA North Central Region tournament Friday. The Mavericks, 16-5, will take on host Washburn Saturday at 9 a.m. for a chance to advance to the national tournament in Altamonte Springs, Fla. May 12-15. St. Cloud State ended its season at 18-7.
Henjum opened up the dual by teaming with Sarah Huls at No. 2 doubles for an 8-1 win over SCSU's Sara Eull and Courtney Hover to improve their record to 16-1 in duals. The Maverick No. 1 doubles team of Pam Le and Maggie Russell also won 8-1 over Huskie team Nicole Lechner/Berit Merrill, ranked seventh in the region. Le/Russell improved to 12-3. UNO closed out doubles play with another win when Mikaila Spalding and Abby Wilson, North Central Conference No. 3 champions, topped SCSU's Alyssa Lauritsen/Jodi Pease 8-6 to improve to 8-2.
The Mavs needed just two more wins to clinch their first NCAA tournament victory. Russell (10-3) got one of them with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles over Courtney Hover after losing twice to her earlier in the season. Henjum clinched the win for UNO and picked up her tenth dual win of the year with a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 3 over Huskie Sara Eull.
The Maverick doubles lineup is 36-6 on the year and every singles player in the lineup has at least eight wins.
Washburn, 21-5, topped Minnesota-Duluth 5-0 and holds a 3-0 series record against UNO. The two will face off at 9 a.m. Saturday.
