Washburn Ends Maverick Season with 5-1 Defeat

TOPEKA, Kan. - The Maverick tennis season came to and end Saturday morning after suffering a 5-1 defeat to Washburn in the NCAA North Central Region final. UNO (16-6) ended the year with a school record 16 wins that included an 11-game winning streak and finished second in the North Central Conference tournament. Washburn, 22-5, will advance to the national tournament in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
Washburn swept doubles play and then won two singles matches to clinch the victory. Senior Sara Batchelor ended her Maverick career by gaining the only point for UNO in the dual with a win at No. 1 singles. She improved to 10-8.
Senior Mikaila Spalding ended her career with the all-time singles win record with 29. Junior Sarah Huls follows with 28. The No. 2 doubles team of Lindsay Henjum and Sarah Huls ended the season at 16-2, setting a UNO single-season record for doubles wins and senior Shannon Dinovo tied the record for singles wins with 11 this year.
