UNO Soccer Sneaks by Missouri Southern

Following the upset victory versus No. 16-ranked Southwest Baptist Saturday afternoon, UNO beat Missouri Southern 2-1 in overtime Sunday. The Mavericks struck first at 18:10 when Dani McCawley crossed a pass to Beth McGill and she rifled the ball passed the goalie 10 yards out. Missouri Southern tied the match at 33:34 when Tera Reiner broke away from the Maverick defense and scored unassisted.
With less than 10 seconds remaining in the second half, Reiner had a one on one breakaway chance, but UNO goalie Amy Price was able to save the game and force an overtime period with an outstretched save.
A new rule to the 2004 NCAA rulebook, in the 10 minute overtime period, a goal scored is a golden goal, or game-winner.
Three minutes and 28 seconds into the period, McGill was taken down in the box resulting in a penalty kick. McGill netted the kick to the left post giving the Mavericks a 2-1 victory. The goal scored by McGill was her second of the game and sixth on the season.
Missouri Southern goalie Kaney Tyler recorded 13 saves in the game, and allowed two goals. Despite firing off 32 shots, a season game-high, UNO was only able to score two goals, but the defense also played a huge role in the victory. UNO goalie Amy Price collected 3 saves and allowed one goal in 93:28 minutes of play including the game saving stop at the end of the second half.
The win runs UNO's record to 5-2-0 and since wiping out the 26 home game winning streak last weekend, the Mavs have won three straight at home. Next up for UNO is Rockhurst this Wednesday Sept. 22 at 4 p.m. at Ak-Sar-Ben Field.
