After being on the road for the first 14 matches of the 2004 season, the University of Nebraska at Omaha volleyball team (10-4/1-1 NCC) will open the home portion of the schedule with a 7 p.m. match on Friday, Oct. 1 against 16th-ranked Augustana (10-5/2-1 NCC). The Mavericks will continue NCC action on Saturday, Oct. 2 with a 6 p.m. home contest versus Minnesota State, Mankato (5-9/0-2 NCC). For complete ticket information, please call 1-402-554-MAVS.
The Record:
The Mavericks are currently 10-4 on the season and 1-1 in the North Central Conference after going 2-1 last week including road wins at Wayne State and North Dakota and a four-game loss at St. Cloud State. The loss to SCSU snapped a five-match Maverick winning streak. The Mavericks are 5-1 against North Central Region opponents this season. Although UNO is not ranked in the CSTV/AVCA Division II top 25 poll, they did receive 34 votes and are on the verge of cracking the top 25.

A A A Mavericks Outlast Wayne State in Five Games:
Wayne, Neb. - The University of Nebraska at Omaha volleyball team outlasted Wayne State in a five-game marathon played at Rice Auditorium in Wayne Tuesday evening. UNO won the first two games 30-22 and 30-18, but Wayne State fought back to take games three and four by scores of 30-25 and 31-29. Trailing 9-8 in the deciding fifth game, the Mavericks scored seven of the next eight points to take the match 15-10. UNO improves to 9-3 on the season after winning their fourth-straight match while Wayne State falls to 8-7. The Mavericks have now won all four of their five-game matches this season.
Senior outside hitter Amy McLeay paced Nebraska-Omaha with 23 kills and 15 digs. Junior middle blocker Ashley Freeman also reached double digits in kills with 10. Junior Chelsea Miller and senior Julia McConahay led the Maverick defense with 22 digs apiece, followed by Jenny Rankin with 12 and Christie Johnson's 11. Johnson also dished out 48 set assists in the victory.
A A A UNO Wins NCC Opener Over North Dakota:
Grand Forks, N.D. - Senior outside hitters Jenny Rankin and Amy McLeay each registered 17 kills to lead UNO over North Dakota 3-1 (24-30, 30-23, 30-20, 30-23) in the NCC opener for the Mavericks before 577 fans at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center Friday night. With their fifth straight victory, Nebraska-Omaha improved to 10-3 overall and 1-0 in the NCC while North Dakota fell to 7-6 and 0-2.
The Mavericks dominated the match defensively, holding an 87 to 66 advantage in digs. McLeay tallied a match-high 22 digs while Rankin produced 10 digs as both players notched double-doubles on the night. Besides McLeay, two other Mavericks, junior Chelsea Miller (21) and senior Julia McConahay (20) topped the 20-dig mark.
With the victory, the Mavericks snapped a six-match losing skid to the Sioux. It was UNO's first win over North Dakota since the 2000 season.
Nebraska-Omaha also held a substantial advantage offensively with a 67 to 48 edge in kills and a .259 to .163 avantage in attack percentage. Freshman Carlie Christensen recorded 12 kills, with only one error in 20 attempts for a .550 attack percentage. She also added a match-high six blocks. Junior Ashley Freeman also hit well with 10 kills and a .400 attack percentage.
A A A St. Cloud State Snaps UNO's Five-Match Win Streak
St. Cloud, Minn. - St. Cloud State defeated the University of Nebraska at Omaha volleyball team 28-30, 30-25, 30-28, 33-31 before 213 fans at Halenbeck Hall Saturday evening. The Mavericks let a 29-27 lead in the fourth game slip away as St. Cloud took game four 33-31 to improve to 10-5 overall and 2-1 in the NCC. Nebraska-Omaha falls to 10-4 and 1-1 with the loss, snapping a five-match winning streak.
Senior Amy McLeay led UNO with 22 kills on .291 hitting and 15 digs. Freshman Carlie Christensen hit .360 with 12 kills and two blocks. Junior Chelsea Miller led the Mavericks defensively with 20 digs while junior setter Christie Johnson added 17 digs and 53 assists.
Offensively, St. Cloud State was led by three players in double figure kills, with Lindsey Gothe (15), Leah Herrboldt (14) and Kristi Pangrac (13) leading the Husky attack. The Huskies outhit UNO .278 to .168 in the match, including a .396 to .133 advantage in the fourth game.
Shires Earns 300th Career Victory:
Rose Shires picked up her 300th career victory when the Mavericks swept Hillsdale 3-0 (30-17, 31-29, 30-25) on Sept. 28 at the North Alabama Classic. Shires has amassed a 306-168 (. 646) career record in her 15th season as the Mavericks' mentor. Shires, the 1996 AVCA Division II national coach of the year, is the second winningest coach in the school's history behind Janice Kruger who recorded a 352-96 mark in her nine Maverick seasons from 1979-87.
Rankin Nearing 1,000-Kill Plateau:
Outside hitter Jenny Rankin is looking to become just the 15th player in school history to record 1,000 career kills. Rankin, a senior from North Platte, Neb., needs just 14 kills to reach the 1,000 kill plateau. She is currently second on the team with 137 kills in 2004 and has now recorded 986 career kills.
