North Dakota Holds Off Mavericks, 73-60

GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- North Dakota took advantage of the Mavericks' cold first-half shooting to jump out front, then rode out a 73-60 North Central Conference win Friday night at Ralph Englestad Arena. The No. 10 Mavs, in losing for the second straight time to the Fighting Sioux, are now 15-3 overall and 1-2 in the NCC.
The Mavs shot just 25.9 percent the first half as North Dakota, in shooting 42.4 percent, pulled away to a 10-point lead at halftime, 32-22. North Dakota scored 10 straight points after UNO had taken a 16-15 lead with eight minutes left.
UNO trailed by as many as 14 in the early stages of the second half before rallying to pull within 52-46 on a Ryan Curtis layup with 8:34 to play, but the Sioux answered with five straight points. Randy Bland stopped the run with a three-pointer, but UND came back to score four more to lead 61-49 and the Mavs never could get back into single digits.
Chris DeSpain, who scored UNO's first eight points, led the Mavericks with 15 points, while Randy Bland and Quantel Murphy each added nine and Jamaal Byers eight. The Mavs improved slightly to 36.1 percent shooting the second half and finished at 31.7 percent.
Mike Johnson led North Dakota with 20 points as the Fighting Sioux improved to 16-3 and 2-0. Keith Parks added 17 and Evan Lindahl 13.
UNO is idle until playing at South Dakota on Thursday.
