North Dakota Ends Mavs' Streaks, 78-73

Four players scored in double figures to help North Dakota hold off the Mavericks Saturday night, 78-73, ending No. 5 ranked UNO's 12-game winning streak and 14-game Sapp Fieldhouse winning string in front of 2,600. The North Central Conference loss drops the Mavericks to 15-2 overall and 1-1 in the league.
Abdul Mills led UNO with 20 points and a career-high 14 rebounds, while Quantel Murphy scored a career-best 19 points. Calvin Kapel added 13 points and five assists and Ryan Curtis 10 points.
Keith Parks led four players in double figures for North Dakota, getting 18, while Caro Nobles scored 15, Todd Rypkema 12 and Mike Johnson 11.
The Mavericks jumped out front quickly, leading 15-6 six minutes into the game and 22-12 with 11:07 left, but the Fighting Sioux, 15-3 and 1-0, recovered and closed with a 13-4 run to take a 36-35 lead into the break.
UNO led only briefly, on an opening layup by Ryan Curtis in the second half, before the Sioux took the momentum away and built a 55-46 lead on Steve Bradley's three-pointer with 13:40 to play.
UNO closed the gap with a 9-2 run midway through the half to pull within a pair, but poor free throw shooting down the stretch hurt its chances. The Mavs hit just 11 of 20 from the line the second half and 12 of 23 for the game.
Each time the Mavs cut the North Dakota lead to one possession, the Sioux had an answer. Nobles' two free throws with 2:41 left, followed by a three-pointer with 1:58 to play gave North Dakota a 70-63 edge.
Parks and Johnson each hit a pair of free throws in the final 14 seconds to secure the win.
The teams will square off again in Grand Forks on Friday.
