Mavs Blast Past SCSU, 5-0

Danielle McCawley and Megan McCallister scored their first goals of the year as the Mavs defeated St. Cloud State 5-0 Saturday afternoon at the Soccer Field at Ak-Sar-Ben. The Mavericks won their 12th straight and improved to 12-1-0 and 8-0-0 in the North Central Conference. UNO will finish the weekend with a matchup against 16th-ranked Minnesota State Sunday at 1 p.m. Senior Day Sunday ceremonies will be held before the game. MSU suffered its first NCC blemish with a 0-0 tie to South Dakota Saturday, leaving UNO as the only team in the league with a perfect record.
The Mavs scored in the fifth minute of the game but then failed to score for the rest of the half. Junior midfielder Amber Richardson took a ball off a defender and knocked it in from 20 yards out for the eventual game-winner and her sixth of the year. UNO finished the half with a 17-0 advantage on shots but just a 1-0 lead.
In the second half UNO came out on fire with two goals in less than a minute. At 46:11 freshman forward Amanda Iwansky scored her seventh of the year off a corner kick from junior Beth McGill. Just 32 seconds later sophomore Brandie Beale scored her team-leading 10th of the year when she played a midfield pass from Iwansky into the goal.
The Mavs then got two late goals when McCawley fired in a shot from a corner kick from sophomore Ali Portell in the 71st minute and McCallister scored her collegiate first 10 minutes later on a pass from junior Tricia Braziel.
The Mavs dominated play with a 36-2 advantage on shots and 18-1 lead in shots on goal. Senior Amy Price and sophomore Ellen Petersen combined for the shutout in goal and Price earned her 65th win going into Senior Day.
Joining Price in the 2005 senior class are Becca Fritz, Meghan Pile and Christen Boeckel. The four now have helped UNO to a 70-10-4 record in their four years and they will look to become just the fourth NCAA II school to lead a team to the final four at least four straight years.
