UNO Hosts NCC Meet This Weekend

The Mavericks will host the North Central Conference men's and women's tournament this week for the third time overall and the second straight year. The 54-hole meet will be played on Saturday and Sunday at Elkhorn's Indian Creek Golf Course (202nd and West Maple) and Monday's final round at Shadow Ridge Country Club (185th and Pacific). Tee times will begin at 11 a.m. the first two days and at 9 a.m. on Monday.
Admission is free. Six women's teams, from UNO, North Dakota, South Dakota, Augustana, St. Cloud State and Minnesota State, will compete. Five men's teams, from North Dakota, South Dakota, Augustana, St. Cloud State and Minnesota State, are entered.
Last Week: Mavs Place 1-2 in Nebraska Wesleyan Meet
The Mavericks finished 1-2 in team competition and 1-2-3 in individual play in the 36-hole Nebraska Wesleyan Invitational. Amanda Stock won the meet with a 78-77--155, Carly Froehlich, playing for the UNO Black team, was second with 78-78--156 and Kate O'Dea was third with 77-81--156.
The Courses
Indian Creek Golf Course will play to a par 72 at 6,018 yards on Saturday and 6,181 on Sunday for the women's teams. Shadow Ridge will play to a par 72 at 5,918 yards on Monday. For the men, Indian Creek will play at 7,041 yards Saturday and 7,157 on Sunday and Shadow Ridge at 7,013 on Monday. Both courses will play to a par 72.
The Maverick Season
UNO has won three tournaments and a dual meet, finished second once and fifth once during the fall season. Senior Amanda Stock has won twice and finished second twice in five meets and leads the team with a 78.3 stroke average over nine rounds.
UNO in the NCC
The Mavericks won titles in 2002 and 2003 and finished second by a shot last year behind Minnesota State. UNO's Tanis Hastmann won her fourth straight individual title by four shots over teammate Amanda Stock.
The Coach
Tim Nelson is in his third season as the Mavericks' head coach. Nelson took over the program in June, 2003, after serving one season as the head coach at the College of St. Mary in Omaha. A UNO graduate, he guided the Mavericks to the 2003 North Central Conference title and was named the NCC Coach of the Year.
