Iwansky's Hat Trick Sets Up Maverick Battle

OMAHA, Neb. - Freshman forward Amanda Iwansky scored three times and sophomore forward Brandie Beale had three assists as the seventh-ranked Mavericks defeated North Dakota 5-0 in the first round of the NCAA Central Region tournament Friday afternoon in front of a three-year high 514 fans at the Soccer Field at Ak-Sar-Ben. The win sets up a Maverick-Maverick showdown after No. 24 Minnesota State defeated South Dakota 2-1 in earlier first-round action. MSU and UNO will play Sunday at noon in the regional final with the winner hosting the quarterfinal.

The Mavs (16-2-0) had lost earlier, 1-0, to UND for their only in-region defeat of the year. After getting on the board late in the game this time, UNO ran away with it, improving its all-time record against the Sioux to 8-4-0. Iwansky netted the third hat trick of the year for UNO and first of her career and Beale had a career-high three assists. Beale became the fourth Maverick to tally three assists in a game.
The two teams played the first half scoreless with UNO holding a 12-2 edge in shots. In the second half the Mavs came out on fire, scoring four goals in under 11 minutes. Iwansky, the North Central Conference freshman of the year and an all-NCC first-teamer, scored the opening goal , her fourth game-winner, on a cross from Beale at 54:36. Beale then set up junior forward Beth McGill, the NCC's MVP, in the 62nd minute for McGill's team-leading 14th goal. Beale then concluded her generosity one minute later when she assisted on a goal from sophomore forward Ali Portell. Portell took the ball towards the goal and shot in her fourth of the year after the goalkeeper missed the save.
Iwansky then took over the action with the game's final two goals. In the 65th minute UNO took a free kick that deflected off a defender and bounced around. When it came down Iwansky was able to tap it in for the goal. She then capped scoring at 71:44 when she took a midfield pass from freshman defender Whitney Telschaw and dribbled it in and fired it from the left side. Iwansky is now second on the team with 12 goals and third with 28 points.
UNO out shot the Sioux 20-8 and put 13 shots on goal , including all eight of the ones they took in the second half. North Dakota (12-5-1) put three shots on goal and senior goalkeeper Amy Price and freshman Ellen Petersen stopped all of them to combine for UNO's ninth shutout of the year.
The Mavs are now 9-3-1 all-time in NCAA play and 5-0-0 at home. UNO and Minnesota State met in the 2003 regional final with UNO earning a 3-2 win at home. UNO has defeated the Mavericks of MSU the last four times they have met and holds a 12-1-0 record in the all-time series.
