The highest scoring offense in NCAA tournament games this year will face the nation's fifth highest overall scoring offense as the Mavericks take on Grand Valley State Sunday at noon at the Soccer Field at Ak-Sar-Ben in an NCAA quarterfinal. A win against the No. 12 Lakers would give seventh-ranked UNO its fourth straight trip to the final four, making UNO the fourth team to go to at least four straight NCAA Division II final fours.

UNO led the nation by scoring nine goals in its two shutout wins to open the tournament last weekend. Freshman forward Amanda Iwansky also led all scorers with four goals. GVSU scored three goals on the way to its first quarterfinal and was fifth in the nation in the last NCAA statistics report with 3.79 goals per game this year. Freshman forward Katy Tafler ranked seventh nationally with 2.95 points per game and 1.26 goals per game.
UNO, which has never met GVSU, is 10-3-1 all-time in the NCAA tournament and 3-0-0 in quarterfinal play. At the Soccer Field at Ak-Sar-Ben the Mavs are 6-0-0 all-time in the NCAA tournament. The Mavs have advanced through the quarterfinal in their four postseason trips and finished second nationally in 2002 and third in 2003 and 2004. This is the second time the Mavs have hosted the quarterfinal.
Wrapping up last week - Mavs continue regional dominance
Freshman forward Amanda Iwansky scored four times as the Mavericks hosted and won the Central Region tournament last weekend. She scored her first career hat trick Friday when UNO defeated North Dakota 5-0 and then she added another Sunday in a 4-0 win over Minnesota State. Brandie Beale had three assists against MSU and also added one more Sunday for four tournament points. Sophomore forward Ali Portell added a pair of goals and senior goalkeeper Amy Price was solid in goal with seven saves. UNO's nine goals lead all NCAA tournament teams so far and Iwansky's four goals is the most this year in postseason games.
About the Lakers
Grand Valley State (19-2-0) features a pair of freshman that rank near the top in the national statistics. Forward Katy Tafler was seventh in the nation in the NCAA's latest statistical report with 2.95 points per game and 2.16 goals. Goalkeeper Kristina Nasturzio was third nationally with a 0.32 goals against average and fifth with a .902 save percentage. Tafler scored once in the tournament this year and currently has 58 points off 25 goals and eight assists. Nasturzio earned a pair of shutouts as the Lakers defeated Southern Illinois-Edwardsville 1-0 Friday and Northern Kentucky 2-0 Sunday. She currently has a 0.28 goals against average.
GVSU won the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference title this year and lost just twice, once to Ashland and once to Missouri-St. Louis. UNO has never met Grand Valley and the two have no common opponents this year.
Final four coming up next
The winner Sunday will face the winner of the Franklin Pierce-West Chester game December 1 in a national semifinal in Wichita Falls, Texas. The other semifinal game will feature the West Florida-Carson-Newman winner against the Seattle Pacific-Metro State winner. The final will be December 4. Carson-Newman, UNO and MSCD all made it to the final four last year with the Roadrunners winning it all.
There's no place like Ak-Sar-Ben
The Mavericks will play one more game at the Soccer Field at Ak-Sar-Ben where they went 7-1-0 this year and allowed just two goals. UNO averaged 3.75 goals per game while allowing just 0.25. The offense averaged 12.6 shots on goal per game while the defense kept opponents to just 3.0. Six of the Maverick wins came in shutouts. Beth McGill leads the Mavs with 21 points at Ak-Sar-Ben off nine goals and three assists and Brandie Beale is second with 18 points. The Mavericks are undefeated (6-0-0) in NCAA tournament play at home.
Big-time players in big-time games
Junior forward Beth McGill leads the Mavs with 39 points and has scored 15 of them as the Mavs have gone 4-1-0 against ranked teams. She has seven goals and an assist against teams ranked nationally by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Sophomore forward Brandie Beale is second with nine points against ranked teams. Overall, the Mavs are out scoring ranked teams 15-4. Grand Valley State will be the highest ranked team UNO has faced this year at 12th.
Mavs stay at 7th in the nation
UNO remained in the top-10 of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll for the eighth straight week with a No. 7 ranking. The Mavs
have been ranked as high as fourth and as low as 22nd this year and have been nationally ranked in the last 20 polls by the NSCAA.
Quarterfinal opponent Grand Valley State is 12th in the nation and three-time opponent Minnesota State is 24th. Defending national champion Metro State has been the wire-to-wire top team all year long.

The Mavericks put their three starting forwards on the All-NCC first team and all three of them are on pace to finish in at least the top five in nearly every NCC offensive category. Junior forward Beth McGill, the conference MVP, leads the NCC with 39 points and 16 goals. She is also second with seven assists and second with 73 shots. Sophomore forward Brandie Beale is third in the league with 31 points and fifth with 11 goals. Her nine assists lead the NCC. McGill is second in the NCC with five game-winners and Beale is third with four. Beale leads the NCC with 79 shots. NCC freshman of the year Amanda Iwansky is fourth in the league with 30 points and third with 13 goals.
All three forwards have had a hat trick this year with Beale's coming against Truman, McGill's coming against Minnesota State and Iwansky's coming last Friday against UND in the NCAA tournament.
On defense the Mavs are tops with a 0.58 goals against average and goalkeeper Amy Price is first in the league with a 0.62 goals against average.
Better late then never for Maverick offense
The Mavs are scoring more than three times as many goals in the second half as they are in the first half. In their last 11 games they have scored just seven times in the first half and 29 times in the second half. Despite the offense's early struggles, the defense has kept opponents to just five first-half goals and six second-half goals this year and UNO is out scoring its opponents 58-11 overall. When the Mavs are behind at halftime, they are a perfect 4-0-0 in coming back.

Junior forward Beth McGill was named the NCC player of the year and forward Amanda Iwansky was named the freshman of the year as the Mavericks put six players on the all-NCC team. Seniors Meghan Pile and Amy Price each earned their third academic all-North Central Conference honors as they joined three other Mavericks on the team. Joining the two seniors were juniors Amber Richardson and Beth McGill and sophomore Danielle McCawley, the only 4.00 GPA student-athlete on the list this year. The NCC honored 24 student-athletes with the Mavericks and North Dakota leading the way with five honorees each.
Four named to all-district academic team
The Mavericks named four players to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VII women's soccer team. Amy Price, Danielle McCawley, Pile and McGill all earned spots on the college division second team.

The Mavericks placed 11 student-athletes on the North Central Conference Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll released Wednesday by the conference office. UNO had more players named to the team than any other school. Seniors Pile, Christen Boeckel and Price, juniors Megan Herzberg, McGill and Richardson, sophomores Erin Fosnaugh, McCawley, Ellen Petersen and Ali Portell and freshman Elle Ebisch all earned a spot on the team.
