NCC Title on the Line in Maverick Showdown
Nov 2, 2005 | Women's Soccer
Nebraska-Omaha will take on Minnesota Duluth Saturday at 11 a.m. before playing for the North Central Conference championship Sunday at 1 p.m. against Minnesota State. The No. 7 UNO Mavericks are 13-2-0 with a 9-1-0 NCC record while the 20th-ranked MSU Mavericks are 10-7-1 with a 9-1-1 conference record. The regular season will wrap up with one of the Maverick squads taking home the NCC title. Not only will the NCC log jam get separated, but the NCAA Central Region field will be set after this weekend. UNO is currently first in the region with MSU sitting in third. The tournament berths will be given out Monday at 5 p.m. with the top team in the region hosting a four-team tournament next week.
UNO defeated both UMD and MSU at home earlier in the year by identical 4-0 scores and holds a 4-1-0 all-time record against UMD and 11-1-0 record against MSU. Beth McGill had a hat trick against the Mavericks and scored once against the Bulldogs.
Doing the math - who gets the trophy
UNO will play two games this weekend to wrap up its season while MSU will play just the one against the Mavs. If neither of the teams tie, then the winner of Sunday's UNO-MSU game gets the NCC trophy. If UNO ties Saturday against UMD then the winner Sunday is the champion. If the two teams tie on Sunday, then UNO will be the champion if the Mavs win Saturday. If UNO ties both its games this week then there will be a tie atop the NCC standings, giving both teams the NCC title.
