Iwansky's Goal Gives Mavs NCC Title

MANKATO, Minn. - Freshman Amanda Iwansky scored the game-winner in a 2-1 win at Minnesota State Sunday to give the Mavs their second straight North Central Conference championship. No. 7 Nebraska-Omaha, 15-2-0, was down 1-0 going into the second half until junior Beth McGill scored on a penalty kick. Iwansky then scored the game-winner, her third of the year and ninth goal overall, to give UNO an 11-1-0 NCC record. The win also all but solidified UNO's chances to host the NCAA Central Region tournament this weekend. The Mavs have been the wire-to-wire first place team in the region all year.
UNO gave up the early lead to the No. 20 MSU Mavericks when Gionni Diggs scored in the 20th minute. McGill then got the equalizer when she converted her second PK of the year at the 57:33 mark. Iwansky put the Mavs ahead for good at 74:45 to give them their fifth NCC title in seven years. Freshman Whitney Telschaw assisted on the goal for her first collegiate point. The Mavericks are now 4-0-0 when behind at halftime this year and are 12-1-0 all-time against Minnesota State.
Senior goalkeeper Amy Price made three saves as she improved to 14-2-0 on the year. McGill led the Mavs with five shots and UNO out shot MSU 19-8. UNO took seven corner kicks and kept the MSU Mavericks from taking any. Minnesota State, third in the region, finished the regular season 10-8-1 and in second at 9-2-1 in the NCC.
The UNO Mavericks will now await the NCAA's tournament field announcement Monday at 5 p.m. First-round games would be Friday with the regional championship played Sunday.
