Mavs' Hot Hand Deals UMD Loss

The Mavericks used 56.5 percent shooting to pull away from Minnesota Duluth and protect first place in the North Central Conference with a 93-55 win over the Bulldogs in front of 2,700 fans at Lee & Helene Sapp Fieldhouse.
The victory, the sixth in the past seven games for UNO, along with North Dakota's loss at South Dakota, moved the Mavericks into sole possession of first place in the NCC.
Freshman guard Denny Johnston came off the bench to fire five of six three-point attempts and score a career-high 17 points in leading No. 12 ranked UNO. The Mavs improved to 21-4 on the year and 7-3 in the NCC, while UMD fell to 11-14 and 3-7.
The Bulldogs took advantage of UNO's early shooting struggles to claim a 20-13 lead nine minutes into the game, but the Mavs melted that away as Johnston hit a pair of three-pointers around a Ryan Curtis jumper from the lane.
UNO closed the half with a 17-2 run to take a 38-24 lead into intermission.
The Bulldogs battled back, drawing to within 15 with 13:19 to play on a jumper by John Vaudreuil, 53-38.
Johnston struck back, hitting a pair of three-pointers that put UNO back into control. The Mavericks gave up just one UMD field goal over the next 7:30 and outscored the Bulldogs 32-9 over that stretch.
Vaudreuil and Matt Rawley each scored 14 points to lead UMD, which shot just 30.3 percent from the field for the game.
Randy Bland added 14 points, Andre Tarpley 11 and Curtis 10 to go with a game-high eight rebounds.
The teams will meet again next Thursday, Feb. 24, in Duluth. UNO will then close the regular season at Minnesota State in Mankato on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 26.
