No. 11 Mavs Face Important Road Tests

The Mavericks will finish regular season play on the road this week, with contests at Minnesota Duluth Thursday at 8 p.m. and Minnesota State Saturday in Mankato at 4 p.m.

The Mavericks are 21-4 on the season and are 7-3 and in first place in the North Central Conference. UNO is ranked No. 11 in this week's NABC poll, which is released on Tuesday evening each week. UNO was ranked second in the North Central Region last week, with a new poll to come out on Feb. 23. Minnesota Duluth is 11-14 and 3-7 and Minnesota State, ranked No. 14, is 20-5 and 6-4.
The Coach
Kevin McKenna is in his fourth season as the head coach of the Mavericks, with a record of 87-31. He has guided the Mavs to three-straight 20-win seasons, one North Central Conference title and two appearances in the NCAA II tournament. McKenna is a 1993 graduate of Creighton. He was named the NCC's coach of the year last season. McKenna's NCC record is 38-20.
Looking Back
The Mavericks survived a shaky start to recover and pin a 93-55 NCC defeat on Minnesota Duluth on Senior Night at Sapp Fieldhouse last Saturday. Freshman guard Denny Johnston came off the bench to spark the Maverick win, hitting five of six three-pointers and 17 points. The Bulldogs held a 20-13 lead midway through the first half when Johnston came in to a pair of threes in an 8-0 run. After UMD cut a 20-point deficit to 53-38 in the second half, Johnston hit two more in a 30-second stretch, fueling another 8-0 run and launching the Mavs to their 21st victory.
Looking Ahead
The Mavericks can clinch their second straight NCC regular season title with a pair of wins this week. The NCC's Wells Fargo Finals will begin with first-round games on Tuesday, March 1 on the campus sites of the teams that finish Nos. 2-3-4. The regular season champion will host semifinal games March 4 and the championship game on March 5.
