Mavs Shock Coyotes, 77-72 in Overtime

Abdul Mills' three pointer with less than two seconds left forced overtime and propelled the 18th-ranked Mavericks to a 77-72 North Central Conference win over South Dakota Thursday night in front of 2,200 fans and a state-wide television audience.
The Coyotes took a 62-58 lead on Josh Mueller's two free throws with 15 seconds left in the second half, but UNO junior forward Ryan Curtis answered with two free shots with 8.6 seconds remaining. Mills fouled Mueller on the inbounds play, but he hit just his first free shot.
Curtis snared the rebound and fed to Mills who banked in the tying shot from the top of the circle. A desparation 40-footer by USD's Steve Anderson bounced off the rim.
Mills, a senior guard from Brooklyn, N.Y., then hit two free shots to open overtime and Randy Bland nailed a three-pointer as UNO scored the first five points and never trailed again.
Mills and Curtis each scored 14 points and Bland 13 to lead UNO, which is now 18-3 on the season and 4-2 in the NCC. The Coyotes fell to 16-5 and 2-4 while losing their fourth straight NCC game.
The Mavericks used a 7-2 run at the end of the first half to take a 35-30 lead at the break, but USD opened the second with a 7-0 run in a game that had 18 lead changes and 12 ties.
Mueller, who finished with a game-high 27 points, scored the last nine points in regulation for the Coyotes after UNO had tied the game at 54 with 5:48 to play. He hit four three-pointers and was 13-for-15 from the line before fouling out with 50 seconds left in the overtime.
Mills was just 2-for-13 for the game and 2-for-11 from behind the three-point arc, but connected on eight of 13 free throws. He also added five rebounds and a game-high four assists.
The Mavericks are next in action Saturday night when they play at Augustana in Sioux Falls, S.D., at 8.
