Mavs Down Vikings 78-61, Tie for 1st

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- No. 18 UNO shot 57.4 percent from the field and breezed to a 78-61 win over Augustana Saturday night at the Elmen Center to move into a tie for first place in the North Central Confernce.
Ryan Curtis scored 15 points, Abdul Mills 12 and Calvin Kapels 10 to lead the Mavs, who are now 19-3 overall and 5-2 in the NCC. No. 1 ranked Minnesota State, Mankato suffered an 89-76 loss at St. Cloud State to slip back into a tie with UNO.
UNO will face both teams at home next weekend. The Mavs meet St. Cloud State Friday and Minnesota State Saturday at Sapp Fieldhouse at 8 p.m.
"The guys competed defensively right from the start, and then we were able to execute some things offensively," UNO Coach Kevin McKenna said on his post-game radio show on KOZN, 1620 AM. "Our defense produced some fast-break points and we also got some threes to go down."
The Mavs connected on 7 of 14 three-point attempts for the game, led by freshman guard Denny Johnston who hit all three attempts for the game to finish with nine points.
The Mavericks, who have won four straight in the NCC, broke away midway through the first half with a 17-4 run and led at intermission, 41-27, shooting 61.5 percent from the field.
A 14-3 run over a three-minute stretch in the second half put the game away for the Mavs, who shot a more modest 52.4 after halftime.
Jerald Richardson scored 12 points and Joey Ryan 11 to lead the Vikings, who fell to 8-15 and 1-7.
