Mavs Host to 2 Key NCC Games

The Mavericks begin a three-game, two-week homestand with a Friday night contest against St. Cloud State and a Saturday night date with No. 4 ranked Minnesota State, which shares first place with UNO. Both games begin at 8 p.m. at Lee & Helene Sapp Fieldhouse. The Mavs this week moved up six spots to No. 12 in the NCAA II rankings.

The Mavericks are 19-3 on the season and are 5-2 in the North Central Conference. UNO is ranked No. 12 in this week's NABC poll, which is released on Tuesday evening each week. UNO is riding a four-game winning streak.
The Coach
Kevin McKenna is in his fourth season as the head coach of the Mavericks, with a record of 85-30. He has guided the Mavs to three-straight 20-win seasons, one North Central Conference title and two appearances in the NCAA II tournament. McKenna is a 1993 graduate of Creighton. He was named the NCC's coach of the year last season.
UNO in the NCC
The Mavs were North Central Conference regular season and post-season tournament champions in 2003-04. The title was the third all-time for UNO and the first since 1984. The first league championship was in 1979. UNO was 10-4 last year in regular season play and is 36-19 under Kevin McKenna.
Looking Back
The Mavericks pulled a 77-72 overtime decision out of the fire against South Dakota and capped the week with a 78-61 win at Augustana. Senior guard Abdul Mills tied USD with a three-pointer with less than two seconds remaining and the Mavs scored the first five points in the extra session on Thursday at Sapp Fieldhouse. The game featured 18 lead changes and was tied 12 times. Ryan Curtis and Mills each had 14 points in the win. Saturday, Curtis scored 15 points in a balanced Maverick offense that shot 57.4 percent from the field at the Elmen Center in Sioux Falls, S.D. UNO used runs of 13-2 the first half and 14-3 the second to pull away.
Looking Ahead
The Mavericks will be back at Sapp Fieldhouse for the final regular season home game, hosting Minnesota Duluth at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 19. UNO then will finish regular season play at UMD on Feb. 24 and at Minnesota State Feb. 26.
