Mavs Resume Spring Play in 2 Meets

UNO will get back on the tournament trail this week, competing in a junior varsity meet in Hastings, Neb., Friday at Southern Hills Golf Course at 10 a.m and at the Augustana College Invitational in Sioux Falls, S.D., Saturday at the 5,800-yard, par-72 Prairie Green Golf Course.
Teams entered in the Augustana tournament: Augustana, UNO, South Dakota, South Dakota State, North Dakota State, Minnesota State, Mankato, Dakota Wesleyan, Northwestern College, Minnesota-Crookston, Northern State, Briar Cliff and Southwest Minnesota State. The first tee time is 11 a.m.
The Lineups
At Augustana, the Mavs will send Tanis Hastmann, Mandy Houtz, Lindsay Newton, Amanda Stock, Sara Wolfe and Allyson Yung to the tee. At Hastings, the lineup will include Amber Dodge, Carly Froehlich, Lindsey Herrera, Lynn Mulligan, Kate O'Dea and Mallery Polodna. The low scorer from Friday's play will also compete at Augustana.
In the Fall
The Mavericks finished second in the North Central Conference and senior Tanis Hastmann won her fourth-straight individual title in the final fall event Oct. 9-11. Prior to that, the Mavs won two tournaments and finished second once. Hastmann and junior Amanda Stock, who was second in the NCC meet, each were named to the all-North Central Conference team.
The Coach
Tim Nelson is in his second season as the Mavericks' head coach. The long-time local teaching professional took over the program in June, 2003 after serving one season as the head coach at the College of St. Mary in Omaha. Nelson has been a member of the Professional Golfers' Association (PGA) since 1972. A UNO graduate, he guided the Mavericks to the 2003 North Central Conference title in the fall, the team's second in a row, and was named the NCC Coach of the Year.
On Deck
The Mavericks will host the Ironwood Collegiate Classic at Ironwood Country Club in Omaha on April 8-9. Schools entered in the 36-hole tournament are Minnesota State, Mankato, North Dakota, Concordia-St. Paul, Truman State, Missouri Western and UNO. Tee-times will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Friday on the 5,999-yard, par-72 layout. The Mavericks are the defending champions in the event, which is being held for a fourth-straight year. UNO senior Tanis Hastmann will be shooting for her fourth-straight individual title in the event.
