Minnesota State Upends Mavs, 62-52

Minnesota State used a stout defense and rode the 24-point effort of Jamel Staten Friday night to reach the North Central Conference Wells Fargo Finals championship game with a 62-52 victory over the No. 5 ranked Mavericks in front of 3,000 fans at Sapp Fieldhouse.
MSU, ranked No. 20 and now 23-6, will meet South Dakota at 7 Saturday night for the championship and an automatic berth in the NCAA Division II tournament, which begins March 12.
The Mavericks, 23-5 after winning the NCC's regular season title, will now await word on where they will play in the regional. The selection show will be at 9:30 p.m. Sunday and the Mavs and their families will gather at the Ice House at 109th and Maple Streets for the selection show.
UNO went up early on the strength of a pair of Andre Tarpley three-pointers, another by Abdul Mills and a fourth by Denny Johnston in taking a 17-9 lead with 12:21 left in the first half.
Three-pointers by Luke Anderson and Staten helped MSU recover. Minnesota State closed the first half with a 13-7 run.
Staten's three-point play with 8:42 left gave MSU a 49-39 lead and the Mavericks couldn't slice the deficit to eight the rest of the way.
Tarpley finished with 14 points to lead UNO and Mills added 11.
