Regional Meet Next for Mavericks

The Mavericks' next tournament stop will be in the 54-hole NCAA II North Regional May 2-3 in Winona, Minn. Six teams will compete for two berths in the eight-team national tournament in Albuquerque, N.M. The regional meet will be on the Cedar Valley Golf Course near Winona.
The other teams competing are North Dakota, Truman State, South Dakota, Southwest Minnesota State and Minnesota State, Mankato. The team will play a practice round on May 1 and then will play 36-holes on Monday and the final 18-hole round on Tuesday. In addition to the top two teams, the top two individuals not on those teams will also advance to the national tournament.
The Lineup
UNO will send Amanda Stock, Tanis Hastmann, Mandy Houtz, Sara Wolfe and Carly Froehlich to the tournament.
UNO in the Regionals
This is UNO's fourth trip to the regional meet. The Mavericks were fourth in last year's regional, led by Tanis Hastmann's 54-hole total of 250, which was good for a tie for fifth place. UNO was third in the 2003 regional and finished second in 2002 and made its only trip to the national meet, finishing eighth. UNO was also represented in the 2001 regional by Stephanie Oster, who earned a spot in the national meet.
Last Outing
UNO finished third in the MSU Maverick Invitational in Waseca, Minn., April 17. The meet, shortened to one round because of rain, was won by Minnesota State. UNO was eight shots off the pace, led by Amanda Stock and Tanis Hastmann, who each carded 82s.
In the Fall
The Mavericks finished second in the North Central Conference and senior Tanis Hastmann won her fourth-straight individual title in the final fall event Oct. 9-11. Prior to that, the Mavs won two tournaments and finished second once. Hastmann and junior Amanda Stock, who was second in the NCC meet, each were named to the all-North Central Conference team.
The Coach
Tim Nelson is in his second season as the Mavericks' head coach. Nelson took over the program in June, 2003, after serving one season as the head coach at the College of St. Mary in Omaha. A UNO graduate, he guided the Mavericks to the 2003 North Central Conference title and was named the NCC Coach of the Year.
