UNO Tennis Wins First Round NCAA Match

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The University of Nebraska at Omaha women's tennis team (15-5) advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division II Tournament with a 5-1 win over Colorado State-Pueblo in first round action Friday on the Washburn University campus.
The Mavericks set the tone early in the dual by winning all three doubles' matches. At first doubles, Pam Le and Maggie Russell blanked Melissa Brown and Ashley Erickson, 8-0. At second doubles, Abby Wilson and Katie Schmidt pulled out an 8-5 win over Kindi Vaughan and Cyndi Nagy. The third doubles' team of Sarah Huls and Lindsay Henjum defeated Shirley DuVal and September Sisneros, 8-1.
The third-seeded Mavericks only needed wins at third and sixth singles to secure the victory. At third singles, Pam Le recovered from 6-1 first set loss by sweeping through the next two sets over Ashley Erickson 6-0, 6-0. Abby Wilson defeated September Sisneros 6-0, 6-2 at sixth singles. Colorado State's lone victory came at third singles with Cyndi Nagy upending Lindsay Henjum 6-1, 6-1.
The Mavericks, who earned an automatic qualification to the NCAA Tournament by winning the program's first North Central Conference title on April 23, will battle the Washburn-North Dakota winner at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 7, for the right to advance to the Round of 16 in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
