Mavs Earn Preseason No. 4 Rank, Top NCC Spot

Soccer fans and the media will have a chance to see the defending North Central Conference champion Mavericks in action this Saturday in the annual Meet the Mavs Day, free to the public. Head coach Don Klosterman, 13 returning letterwinners, including All-American Beth McGill and six other starters, and 10 newcomers will be available for pictures Saturday night at 5:30. They will then put on a free clinic with youth players from around the area at 6 p.m. The Mavs earned the top spot in the NCC preseason poll and were ranked fourth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America preseason poll. The Mavs got six of the seven first-place votes in the league poll. Last year UNO won the conference regular season and tournament titles and finished third in the NCAA tournament with a 19-4-2 record. UNO finished fourth in the final NSCAA voting.
This will be the only chance to see UNO in action until September 16, the first home game of the year. The Mavericks will open the season with two games in Edmond, Oklahoma, against host Central Oklahoma at 4 p.m. on August 26 and Midwestern State at 1 p.m. on August 27. UNO will play just six games at home, all of them North Central Conference games.
Mavs stacked as they return All-American McGill, 6 all-region players
Successful and experienced players will return to the UNO lineup as the Mavs look for another shot at a national championship. All-American Beth McGill, UNO's leading scorer from last year, will join five other all-region players as the Mavs look to return to the final four. Fellow forward Brandie Beale, midfielder Amber Richardson, defenders Becca Fritz and Meghan Pile and goalkeeper Amy Price all gained all-region status last year and will be back this year.
The Mavericks will return 76 percent of their point scoring, 74 percent of their goal scoring and 79 percent of their assists. McGill led UNO in all three categories last year with 51 points off 20 goals and 11 assists. Her point total was 30th in the nation. Beale returns after finishing third in scoring with 36 points off 15 goals and six assists. Anne Willrett, an all-NCC first-teamer as a senior last year, was the second leading scorer.
Richardson returns for her second season as the anchor of the midfield after scoring three goals and eight assists for 14 points.
Three-year starters Fritz, Pile and Price will return for their senior season to lead the defense. The three have combined for 38 shutouts in their first three years.
