Mavs Host Coyotes in NCC Match-up

The Mavericks return to Lee & Helene Sapp Fieldhouse for two games, hosting NCC rival South Dakota Thursday and a rematch with Upper Iowa Saturday in the final non-conference game of the season. Games times for both are at 8 p.m.
The Records
The Mavs go into this week's play at 11-9 overall and 1-2 in the North Central Conference. South Dakota is 13-4 and 1-1and Upper Iowa is 2-18 entering the weekend.
The Series
South Dakota leads UNO 51-32 in the all-time series. UNO won both meetings last year over the Coyotes, 87-76 in Vermillion and 77-72 in overtime in Omaha. The Mavericks won the first meeting ever with Upper Iowa last Saturday, 85-67.
The Opponents
South Dakota is 13-4 overall and 1-1 in the North Central Conference under Coach Dave Boots. The Coyotes grabbed their first NCC win last Saturday with an 81-64 decision over North Dakota. Turner Trofholz, a 6-8 senior forward who earned all-NCC honors last year, leads the team in scoring at 21.8 and rebounding at 10.3. USD has four players averaging in double figures and comes into the contest averaging 82.6 points per game.
Upper Iowa is 2-18 going into the Saturday night game with UNO under coach Dave Martin, who is in his sixth season as head coach after spending 10 years as an assistant coach in the program. Upper Iowa, playing an independent schedule this year, will join the Northern Sun Conference next year for all sports.

The Mavericks rallied late, but fell short in a 69-62 home loss to North Dakota, then rebounded to defeat Upper Iowa on the road Saturday, 85-67. Calvin Kapels had 20 points and 8 rebounds vs. UND and Ryan Curtis recorded two double-doubles with 18-12 vs. UND and 14-11 at Upper Iowa.

The games will be broadcast on KOZN, 1620 AM, with David Gustafson calling the action. Thursday game with South Dakota will be televised on NET2, statewide cable, and also on South Dakota Public Television.

The Coach
Derrin Hansen is in his first season as a collegiate head coach. The seven-year Maverick assistant took over the program in June. He is a 1991 graduate of Nebraska Wesleyan University. He served as the head basketball and track coach at Elmwood-Murdock, Neb., High School for two years and was a graduate assistant at Nebraska-Kearney while earning his master's degree in 1995. Kenya Crandell is the associate head coach and Mitch Mosser the assistant coach.
