OMAHA, Neb. -- Scott Parse's power play goal midway through the third period put UNO on top and Nenad Gajic's empty net goal in the final minute clinched a 7-5 Central Collegiate Hockey Association win over Western Michigan Friday night at Qwest Center Omaha.
The two teams will meet again Saturday night at 7:05 in a wrap-up of the two-game series. UNO is now 2-1-2 and 1-0 in the league, while the Broncos fell to 2-3-0 overall and in the CCHA.
Western Michigan took a 2-0 first period lead on power play goals by Mark Letestu, who finished with a hat trick, and Dave Krisky, but the Mavericks rallied to take a 3-2 lead into the first intermission on a pair of goals by Alex Nikiforuk and one by NIck Fanto.
Nikiforuk got UNO on the board at 12:21 on assists from Gajic and Phil Angell, then added a power play goal on a pass from Parse at 17:51. Fanto, with assists from Chris Wilson and Adam Bartholomay, put UNO on top for the first time at 18:41.
Letestu tied the game on an unassisted effort at 1:40 of the second, but the Mavericks quickly went back up on freshman defenseman Eddie Del Grosso's first career goal two minutes later.
Letestu, who also had one assist, tied the game when UNO goaltender Jerad Kaufmann mishandled the puck in the high slot and it came free for an empty-net shot at 12:41.
UNO took the lead at 5-4 when Juha Uotila scored from Tomas Klempa and Bryan Marshall just 39 seconds into the third period on a power play. Again, the Broncos evened the score, just three minutes later, on a shot from Brian Bicek.
Parse made it 6-5 when he slipped the puck under goaltender Daniel Bellissimo on a power play at 10:12. Uotila and Dan Knapp got the assists.
Gajic took a pass from Dan Swanson to score his second of the year with 36 seconds left to secure the win.
UNO outshot the Broncos 28-22. Freshman goalie Jeremie Dupont, who played the final 27 minutes, made nine saves and gave up one goal, earned the win in the nets for the Mavericks.
