Mavs fall to Huskers in exhibition tilt

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Despite a breakout performance by freshman guard Andrew Bridger, the University of Nebraska-Omaha closed out its preseason schedule Tuesday night, losing to Nebraska-Lincoln, 76-62, before an announced 9,658 fans at the Devaney Sports Center.

Bridger had a big game in his hometown, leading the Mavericks with 23 points, shooting 7-for-11, including 3-for-6 on 3-pointers. With starting guard Josh Vanderslice in early foul trouble, Bridger was forced into action early, going on to play 34 minutes.

Freshman forward Matt Newman, also from Lincoln scored 12 points. Wing Denny Johnston was the leading rebounder with seven.

UNO was unable to contain the Huskers' big man, 6-foot-11 center Aleks Maric, who led all scorers with 29 points, adding 10 rebounds.

The Huskers led 44-32 at halftime, led by Maric's 16 points and seven rebounds.

The game was the regular-season opener for UNL, giving them a 1-0 record.

The Mavericks begin their regular season this weekend at the American Family Hoopster Classic, hosted by St. Cloud State. UNO faces Mary Friday night, followed by Rockhurst on Saturday.
