UNO Rallies to Win Season Opener

ST. CLOUD, Minn. -- The University of Nebraska-Omaha men's basketball team got its regular season off on the right track by defeating Mary, 64-61, in the first round of the American Family Hoopster Classic, hosted by St. Cloud State, Friday night.
The Mavericks (1-0) fell behind early as Mary (0-1) raced out to an 11-2 lead. UNO fought back to cut the halftime to four, 31-27. A jumper by Jeremy Williams and two free throws by Michael Jenkins tied the game leading off the second half. A few minutes later, UNO rolled off a 14-2 run to build an 11-point lead.
But the Marauders fought back and retook the lead, holding a four-point advantage, 60-56, with 1:36 to play. A free throw by Zac Robinson and another inside jumper by Williams cut the lead to one. Mary's Eric Erdmann got one point back with a free throw with 33 ticks left on the clock.
That set the stage for Robinson, who knocked down his third 3-pointer of the game with 18 seconds left to give UNO back the lead. Two free throws by Josh Vanderslice in the waning seconds iced the victory for the Mavericks.
Jenkins led the Mavs with 15 points, with Robinson close behind with 14. Williams scored 10 and grabbed a team-leading eight rebounds. Zach Dosch led the Marauders with 15 points and seven boards.
UNO plays Rockhurst in the second day of action, Saturday night at 6.
