Mavs Lose Early Lead, Fall to Rockhurst

ST. CLOUD, Minn. -- Rockhurst overcame a first-half deficit Saturday night to post a 76-63 win over the Mavericks in the American Family Hoopster Classic at Halenbeck Hall.
Michael Jenkins led UNO with 18 points, Denny Johnson added 15 and Jeremy Williams 14 as the Mavericks fell to 1-1 on the young season. Jenkins connected on 3 of 6 three-pointers and was a perfect 7-for-7 from the line. Jenkins was named to the all-tournament team.
UNO jumped out to a seven-point lead in the opening five minutes, but the Mavs went on a six-minute scoreless streak to allow the Hawks to take control.
Rockhurst (1-1) expanded a 36-25 halftime lead to as many as 17 points at the midway point of the second half before UNO whittled the margin down to nine with less than a minute to play.
The Mavericks shot 48 percent from the field, 26.3 percent from behind the arc and 76.9 percent from the line.
Rockhurst, led by four double-figure scorers, out rebounded UNO 36-21. John Torson led the Hawks with 18 points and nine rebounds.
UNO opens its home season Tuesday, Nov. 21, against Missouri Western at 7 p.m. at Sapp Fieldhouse.
