4 Mavs, Coach Honored by NGCA

ALLENDALE, Mich. -- Senior Mandy Houtz was named the 2006 winner of the Kim Moore Spirit Award Thursday by the National Golf Coaches Association, heading a group of post-season honors for the Mavericks.
In addition, Tim Nelson was named the North Region Coach of the Year, senior Amanda Stock earned a berth on the all-region team and sophomores Carly Froehlich and Lindsay Newton were named to the All-American Scholar Team.
The Spirit Award is given to an individual who has demonstrated exceptional commitment in overcoming adversity, as well as good sportsmanship. Houtz, from Manhattan, Kan., suffered two broken legs when struck by a car in December, 2003. She took the spring semester off while rehabilitating and returned to school in the fall of 2004.
Since then, she has been a key member of the Mavericks' two NCAA Division II North Regional titles and two straight appearances in the NCAA finals.
Stock has been the Mavericks' top golfer most of the 2005-06 season. She underwent shoulder surgery last October and finished fourth in the recent North Regional tournament, helping UNO win the meet and advance to the finals.
