Aug 23, 2006 | Women's Soccer
The national champion Mavericks will open the 2006 season Thursday, hosting Minnesota-Crookston at 5 p.m. at Ak-Sar-Ben Field to start off a two-game opening week. UNO will then travel to Rockhurst on Saturday night for its first road game at 7 in Kansas City.
The Records
The Mavericks were 20-2 last season and won the North Central Conference and the NCAA II championships. Minnesota-Crookston was 2-19 last year and Rockhurst finished the 2005 season at 12-6-1. The Mavericks are ranked No. 1 in the NSCA/Adidas pre-season poll.
The Series
This is the first-ever meeting between UNO and Minnesota-Crookston, which is an NCAA II school in the Northern Sun Conference. The UNO-Rockhurst series is deadlocked at 3-3. The last time the teams met was in 2004 and UNO recorded a 5-0 win.
The Coach
Don Klosterman is in his eighth season as the UNO head coach. Klosterman, a 1974 graduate of Benedictine, has a 124-26-4 mark and is the only coach the Mavericks have ever had. He has twice been named the NSCAA Coach of the Year, in 2002 and 2005.
Last Year
The Mavericks were 20-2 in the 2005 season and won their fifth North Central Conference title before going on to claim their first NCAA II championship with a 2-1 overtime win over Seattle Pacific.
Next Week
UNO will be home to face Truman State on Saturday, Sept. 2 and Missouri Southern on Sunday, Sept. 3. Both matches will begin at 1:30 p.m. at Ak-Sar-Ben Field. North Dakota will also be in action both days, playing Missouri Southern on Saturday and Truman on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. each day.

* Key returning players include third-team All-American Beth McGill, who shared the team-lead with 16 goals, and was the NCC's player of the year.
* Other all-NCC players back include Amanda Iwansky, who also had 16 goals, Amber Richardson, who scored seven, and 13-goal scorer Brandie Beale, who scored the winning goal 3:03 into overtime in the national title match.
* Junior Ellen Petersen will take over in goal for the graduated Amy Price. Petersen is a two-year letterwinner for the Mavericks.
