
Mavs Battle Back to Upset No. 10 CMSU

WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- The 24th-ranked University of Nebraska at Omaha volleyball team stormed back from a two-game deficit to upset 10th-ranked Central Missouri State 23-30, 28-30, 30-17, 30-28, 15-13 in the season opener for both teams at the Central Missouri State Jennies Challenge.
The Mavericks were led by junior middle blocker Carlie Christensen who recorded 19 kills on .486 hitting while adding three service aces. Junior setter Katie Agnew notched career highs with eight kills, 50 assists, and 20 digs.
Agnew distributed the ball very effectively, with four UNO players recording double-figure kill totals. Senior outside hitter Christina Reicks recorded a double-double with 15 kills and 23 digs. Freshman outside hitter Kelli Goeser collected 13 kills and two blocks in her first collegiate match. Junior rightside hitter Nicole McLeod tallied 12 kills with no errors in 29 attempts for a .414 attack percentage.
The Mavericks were led defensively by senior Stacie Wemhoff's career-high 26 digs as both teams collected 98 digs for the match. UNO outhit the Jennies .243 to .167 as the Mavericks notched their first win over CMSU since the 1993 season.
After losing the first two games, the Mavericks outhit CMSU .385 to .081 to register the easy 30-18 win in game three. UNO continued its hot hitting in the fourth game with 20 kills on .321 hitting and tied the match with a 30-28 victory.
The Mavericks raced out to a 3-0 lead in the see-saw fifth game with two kills by McLeod and another by Christensen. However, the Jennies scored eight of the next nine points to take an 8-4 lead at the side change. UNO then rattled off eight of the next nine points to take a 12-9 advantage. The Jennies answered with four-straight points to take a 13-12 lead. The Mavericks, however, ended the match with three-straight points as CMSU was plagued by three-consecutive attack errors.
UNO (1-0) will continue action in the tournament on Friday when they battle Pittsburg State at 4 p.m. and William Jewell at 7 p.m.
