Mavericks Host 2 NCC Foes This Weekend

The Mavericks begin a five-match homestand this weekend, hosting South Dakota Friday at 4 p.m. and North Dakota Sunday at 1 p.m. at Ak-Sar-Ben Field in key North Central Conference matches. UNO and USD are tied for first place in the league entering Friday's contest.
The Records
No. 1 ranked UNO improved to 7-0 overall and 2-0 in the NCC last week. South Dakota is 5-2-1 and also 2-0, while North Dakota is 3-5-1 and 1-1-1 before its non-conference match Wednesday against Minnesota-Crookston.
The Series
UNO leads the South Dakota series, 8-0, after posting 2-1 and 3-1 wins last season. The Mavericks hold an 8-4 edge over North Dakota. The teams split the two regular season matches before UNO took a 5-0 win in the NCAA regionals.
The Coach
Don Klosterman is in his eighth season as the UNO head coach. Klosterman, a 1974 graduate of Benedictine, has a 131-26-4 mark and is the only coach the Mavericks have ever had. He has twice been named the NSCAA Coach of the Year, in 2002 and 2005.
Last Week
UNO took over first place in the NCC with a 2-0 win last Sunday at Minnesota Duluth. Beth McGill broke a scoreless tie with her ninth goal of the season at 58:08 and Niya Branch added her second of the year at 72:35. Amanda Iwansky had two assists and McGill one.
Next Week
The Mavericks will host Wayne State on Sept. 27 at 4 p.m. and St. Cloud State on Sept. 30 at 1 p.m. in action next week.
Maverick Notes...
* Senior forward Beth McGill became the all-time scoring leader for UNO with her goal and assist vs. Minnesota Duluth. She now has 45 goals and 23 assists. She is tied with Stephanie Kruse (1999-2002) for career goals.
* Danielle McCawley was named the NCC's defensive player of the week. She helped spearhead a defensive effort that limited UMD to just one shot on goal.
* McGill is the current career leader in points per game, averaging 2.09 through 54 matches, and goals per game, 0.83.
* This is the third-best start to a season for the Mavs, who won their first 22 in 2002 and their first nine in 2003.
