Maverick Golfers Open at Drury Invitational

UNO will open its 2006 fall women's golf schedule with the 36-hole Drury University Invitational in Springfield, Mo. This will be UNO's first appearance in the tournament, which will be held on the par-72, 6,019-yard Rivercut Golf Course.
The Mavericks will send all seven players on the roster, three freshmen and four juniors, to compete in the opening tournament. The veteran players returning include Lynn Mulligan, Lindsay Newton, Kate O'Dea and Sara Wolfe. Newton led the Mavericks to a seventh place team finish with a tie for 14th in last year's NCAA II nationals.
Over the course of the 2005-06 season, UNO won five tournaments and a dual meet, finished second and third twice and fourth and fifth once each during the season, including the North Central regional title, earning a trip to the national final eight. Besides Newton, teammate Lynn Mulligan was tied for 32nd with a 247 total after a final-round 79.
This will be Tim Nelson's fourth season as the Mavericks' head coach. Nelson took over the program in June, 2003, after serving one season as the head coach at the College of St. Mary in Omaha. A UNO graduate, he guided the Mavericks to the 2003 North Central Conference title and was named the NCC Coach of the Year. The Mavericks have advanced to the national finals in 2005 and 2006.
Next week, the Mavericks will head north to compete in the Concordia-St. Paul Invitational at The Jewel Golf Course in Lake City, Minn., on Sept. 16-17.
